As a Central Illinois photographer specializing in candid, true-to-color family, senior, and newborn photography, I love when clients bring their pets along for a photo session! Whether it’s a goofy golden retriever, a bouncy puppy, or even a pony, pets are truly part of the family, and they deserve to be in the frame.

If you're planning a photo session in the Springfield, IL area and want to include your furry friend, here are 7 helpful tips to make it a smooth and memorable experience.
1. Let Me Know in Advance
If you're planning to include a pet in your photoshoot, let me know ahead of time. That way, I can choose a pet-friendly location around Springfield or Central Illinois (like Lincoln Memorial Garden, Washington Park, or your own scenic backyard!) and plan for the extra time and flexibility pets sometimes need.
2. Bring Treats, Toys & Comfort Items
Just like kids, pets need a little motivation sometimes! Treats, a favorite squeaky toy, or even a cozy blanket can help keep them calm and engaged. These small items go a long way toward capturing sweet, relaxed moments with your pet.
3. Give Them the Spa Experience
People aren't the only one who deserves to look their best for sessions! A quick grooming, whether it’s a fresh bath, a brushed coat, or a trimmed mane, can help your pet look their best in photos. Clean paws are a bonus, especially for indoor sessions.
Once they are all cleaned up, pick out a neutral colored leash and maybe even a bandana to accessorize! Try to stay away from bright colored leashes to keep attention away from it.
4. Get Their Energy Out
A walk or play session before your shoot can help get the wiggles out and leave your pet calmer during photos. This is especially important for high-energy dogs during outdoor family or senior sessions in Springfield parks or downtown locations.
Besides the treats and bribes, I have found this to be one of the most important tips. Show up to your session 15 minutes or more ahead of time and let them sniff out the area and burn off any extra energy so they are ready to go during their session!
5. Don't Worry About the Little Things: Like Posing
The best photos are often the candid ones! If your dog wants to lick your toddler’s face or insists on running around with you, I’ll capture those authentic moments. My style is natural and relaxed, and I love when pets just do their thing. After all, that's what made you fall in love with them in the first place!
6. Bring Someone Along to Handle Your Pet
If you have a friend or family member who can help manage your pet during parts of the shoot, that’s ideal, especially for newborn sessions or senior portraits where we’ll want a mix of photos with and without your pet.
I will start out the session with photos with your pet. Then, if you bring a handler, we will finish up with pictures without your furry-friend.
7. Be Patient and Have Fun!!
Animals can be unpredictable, but that's part of who they are! Some of the sweetest moments happen when you’re simply snuggling, walking, or laughing with your pet. I’ll guide you through the session and capture the connection that makes your family (fur babies included) so special.
Try not to get frustrated with them if they forget how to "sit" or "stay". We will capture beautiful photos either way!
